My wife and I were on the patio building a new grill. And he locked the sliding door. Neither of us had keys, so we had to call the fire department. They unlocked my car so we could get access to the garage door opener.

Meanwhile our son cannot understand why we won't just open the door, and he's freaking out.

Lovely way to end a crappy weekend...

I finally did it!

The other day, with a pint of Schneider Edel-Weiss in me at a local cafe, I finally beat my wife at Scrabble!

To help you understand how huge this is, consider :

1) She has a Masters in Education and has been an Editorial Executive in the Educational Publishing Industry.
2) I can't spell maintenance without a spelling checker.
3) I've lost every scrabble game I've played with her since we met in 1997.

I did it mainly by improving my strategy of playing the board...since I didn't really see myself memorizing the dictionary to improve my word selection. I learned the subtle art of playing 3 letter words to limit the opponents choices if I couldn't score high myself.

For those interested the score was Cindy : 281 / Ethan : 297. I clinched it with a triple word score for Jump. Awwwww yeah!

It's interesting. Being poor this year I was totally in a slump and not really into the christmas spirit. Then literally at the last minute several good things happened and I was able to cheer up for the actual day. I wonder if Earl is right about Karma.

Even though it's not New Years yet I've reflected back and decided that I haven't spent enough quality time with my friends...nor even communicating how much I miss spending time with them. Thus my resolution this year will be to take a more active role in spending time with everyone. So free up yer schedules!

On a sad note, I found out that NamNambulu has split up ( NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!). Apparently the singer left. The next project the other member is working on is Frozen Plasma, and although I haven't heard the new stuff I understand it's NamNamBulu with a different singer...so I'll have to find it if I can.

I like good sci-fi serious anime, but my brother is waaaaaay into the deep end on this stuff. Thankfully I can use him as a filter, but every now and then one creeps through that just bores me to tears.

I'm a sci-fi whore the point that I tivo most sci-fi channel stuff even though I *KNOW* it's gonna be crap. I'm also culling netflix for all it's worth, I think I've run out of good obscure movies.

This one surprised me. I didn't realize how good the show was, and they seem to re-invent themselves every so often to keep from getting canceled. I will say I'm a big fan of Atlantis...I'm glad the show is different enough (although it still sticks to the same formula).

It was one of the first bonding moments with my father. He took me to see it when I was 3 because it was so fucking good he wanted to share it with me. I'm thankful he didn't live to see the ep 1-3 debacle.

So my laptop now works on the internet while I'm over here. I'm actually surprised it took this long for my family to join the 21st century, but now I can finally do something else while my son watches Sesame Street DVDs.

It looks like Gencon is a go for me. I found 2 other people to carpool up with me, so with gas/food/lodging/entry fee I can squeeze it all in for ~$200. At that price I'd be a fool not to go. The little dude will stay here with Grandma while I'm gone, since the wife is also going to a convention that's work related. God bless family in town. Only now when I'm a parent myself do I truly appreciate their close proximity.

Starting to reclaim house from the 'years of the infant'. Might try to host a game night soon.

Not playing MMOs anymore, can't really afford them although I hear guild wars might be worth checking out.

whalebackslim and I went to LZR to see them with Imperative Reaction and SOMAN. I haven't seen this good a concert since the Front 242 'Tyranny for You' tour. I was really impressed with VNV, they seemed to be having a lot of fun on stage, and they did 2 freakin encores.

I'm *still* playing Disgaea, but I'm enjoying the fuck out of it. Not since X-Com has a tactical turn based engine captivated me so. It warms my heart to know that there are 2 more games in the series to enjoy, although I want to squeeze as much as I can from this one before moving on.

Just saw that Lemmings is coming out for PSP. I don't know about anyone else, but I really did enjoy that game and I'm glad to see it going mobile. Here's hoping they add some multiplayer goodness.

I need to brew again before it get's too hot and the bugs become unbearable. Nothing ruins beer like too much 'hint of moth'.

So I was really jonesing the other day to get some tracks from Namnambulu. However all my attempts to find it locally (I need immediate gratification, shipping is too slow) were for naught. Then one of my coworkers did a quick search on Amazon, and it turns out some CD's have featured full length tracks you can download. I spent the better part of an hour harvesting Amazon for all the EBM/Futurepop tracks I could find. Yay legal mp3 downloading!

For those of you in the loop, I did get that job that's next to Dog & Duck pub. It's called Polycot, and I think it's a great fit for me. I'll likely have spending cash soon, so we can do fun stuff again without me getting all pooty about it :-)

Zachary had his first cold, and he got the whole family sick. Wow, it sucks having a whole family sick at the same time. Still trying to shake that post drainage cough, don't stand too close in front of me.

I just uninstalled Star Wars Galaxies. The game had way too many problems with it to be fun anymore, and the devs had an annoying habit of breaking things more than fixing it.

I'm starting to get more into Magic again, I'm installing the online client now. If you wanna play Magic or VTES sometime soon, gimme a holler.

Metrowerks didn't renew my contract before the holidays, so I've been looking...but things are slow. Leads are starting to increase now that the new year is here, but nothing really tangible yet. If anyone hears of PHP/MySQL work, or any entry level position in the gaming industry please let me know.

Aside from that I have free time during the days if anyone else is also free and want to do stuff with me and Zachary.

Bored at work

With today being election day, it's hard to get work done. Guess now is as good a time as any to try and think of other things.

I've been seriously considering getting a gamefly subscription. I have netflix and really enjoy it. Anyone consider gamefly worth it?

I miss having a gaming group. Whether it was the recent addition of my son which reduced my free time, or maybe it's because maybe I've morphed into an uninteresting person to be around, I can't seem to find anyone to play games.(CCG, German board games, cards, etc.) I must say it's made me far more restless than I expected to be, considering that I have a PS2 and a broadband computer connection. Guess I didn't realize how much I craved social interaction with real humans. Hehe, I'm a poster study for why online gaming will not solve lack of social interaction. I bet it's because drinking beer in front of a computer is not the same as at a pub over cards.

The little dude is crawling now, and even though he's starting to explore and get into stuff I must say he's far easier for me to handle now. I guess I'm the exception in that I want him to be independent and experience life for himself. I have no desire to protect him from life experiences, just emotionally scarring stuff. We'll see if I succeed :-)

Getting current

Well, I have a gig now at Metrowerks. It's contract right now, but they want to extend it indefinitely or make it perm, so that's good I guess. We'll see how that goes.

I went the entire weekend without checking my email. I never thought that would happen *ever*. It's amazing what a 6 month old kid will do to your schedule.

BTW, I'm trying to arrange for a guys night out...so that I have one night a week where I can shed the family and do fun stuff. Stay tuned.

Between a rock and a movie

Last night I went to the opening day for Farenheit 9/11. It's one of those movies that everyone has to see.

I went to a Rock Gym for the first time this morning. As I was afraid of heights, I reasoned that this would be a fun way to overcome that fear while also getting some exercise. Turns out I was right. A friend of mine took me to the one in south Austin that has Belaying as well as Bouldering. Once I get a job, I'll probably get the harness and shoes to go more often. It's certainly easier to plan and execute than my other expensive hobby - Scuba diving.

It rained today so I wasn't able to brew, but instead I made Chicken Korma....mmmmmmmmm

Lazy friday

So the SWG Devs at SOE took down TestCenter so they could use the hardware to 'smoke test' the Jedi patch. Guess that leaves me some free time this weekend, so I picked up KOTOR for $19.99 at Fry's. Don't ask me why I didn't get it before now, but the price was too cheap to pass up. I was hoping to pick up Disgea (sp?) as a cheapo as well, as I've heard a lot of good things about it....but It's not a 'Greatest Hits' title yet.

I think I'm gonna brew this weekend. I've been sitting on Saison and Belgian White recipes for a while.

I'm desperate to find more good futurepop (Spektralized, Icon of Coil, Angels & Agony, VNV, are already spoken for). Hook me up!

Being a person very involved in online communities, I figured I really should try out this thing since it not only allows blogging but joins people with similar interests together.

Oh yeah, and having a soapbox that literally millions of other people could read is kinda good for the ego too :-)
